The plot may sound oddly familiar: operatic sensation Christina Joseph leaves a promising career at La Scala and returns to her roots in Nashville, Tennesee where she lands a job singing backup at The Country Palace. She finds an enemy in an aging Country-Western diva, a friend in the diva’s young son, and a mentor in a mysterious janitor who’s determined to make Christina (now Chrissy Jo Jenkins) Country music’s newest star. It’s a splashy, hilarious Country-Western send-up of the classic tale of horror, “The Phantom of the Opera.” Filled with irreverent wit, painful punning, sly contemporary references, singing acts like “Andrew, Lloyd and Webber,” and songs like “Hog Butcher’s Daughter” and “Does Your Daddy Know You Like to Kiss Cowboys?” The show has a large cast with both speaking and ensemble roles for actors of varied ages. CHARACTER LIST Aaron- The mysterious janitor; 40’s-50’s, tall, with handsome but craggy features who looks as if he would have been a country music star in his 20’s. Strong voice. Christina Joseph aka Chrissy Jo Jenkins- Early 20’s, attractive, fit with spunk and pluck; a Martina McBride or Carrie Underwood type. Must be able to sing convincingly in opera-style and then easily glide into “Country Music” mode. Angelo- Stage Hand Gabriella- An opera diva at La Scalla who is miffed by Christina Sally Barker- The reigning “Queen” of Country Music. Carlo Pupi- Gabriella’s philandering husband and director of the opera at La Scala. Major Billy Kincaid- Announcer for The Country Palace, Sally Barker’s husband with an eye for the ladies. Antonio- The Italian tenor at La Scala who is madly in love with Christina. Handsome in that dark, Italian way, with a youthful exuberance and innocence. Clive- The Stage Manager at The Country Opera Skipper- Billy Kincaid and Sally Barker’s son, who sells newspapers outside of The Country Palace. Officer Tammy Faye June Ellie Fay Crenshaw- The Security Officer for The Country Palace who has a crush on Clive. Physical comedy required. Strong woman type. Patsy- Back up singer at The Country Palace June- Back up singer at The Country Palace Ellie Sue- Back up singer Mort De Soleil- Hollywood Producer Crystal Light- Mort’s girlfriend Andrew, Lloyd, Webber and Son- Male quartet of singers at The Country Palace Ensemble: Plays a variety of smaller roles.
